Media Futures Conference addresses media in the area characterised by Lord Reith, the first Director-General of the BBC, as informing, educating, and entertaining.

Media Futures Conference addresses media in the area characterised by Lord Reith, the first Director-General of the BBC, as informing, educating, and entertaining, while recognising that media plays – and is encouraged to play – more varied roles in society.

The conference is focused on media that helps people and citizens understand what is happening in the world, aids insight and understanding, and allows people to reflect on society and the human condition – while recognising that today media plays more varied roles in society.

What have past attendees said?

The opening session, chaired by Peter Day, and the closing keynote and discussion, were exceptionally lively and informative Milverton Wallace, ex-Department of Journalism, City University — Fascinating. Always interesting to listen to viewpoints from another sector Michael Spencer, Sound Strategies Ltd. — A lively and unexpected platform for a very stimulating debate on this issue Clara Lemon, Futurelab Flux — There was a lot more poking of sticks at comfortable sacred cows than conferences which are more themed and tend to preach to the faithful Alan Patrick, Broadsight — Winston session good, Keen debate good, Lewis debate good Professor James Woudhuysen, De Montfort University — More feisty than most which was what was needed Chris Yapp, Capgemini. Further audience feedback can be found on the Discussion and documentation page of the 2008 conference site.

What is unique about the conference?

The Media Futures Conference is unique in attempting to:

  • Establish our ‘ideal’ media futures
  • Imagine innovative media forms as well as new platforms
  • Consider media in its societal context, to enable us to really anticipate and adapt to developments
  • Bring people together across disciplines so we can understand the key contributors to media innovation
  • Have leading practitioners ‘Show and tell’ about new projects, and present case studies to explain the nature and development of real products and services
  • Facilitate a well-informed, honest and inspiring discussion
  • Establish a basis for open development around future media that can break some existing deadlocks
  • Create a ‘future media manifesto’ that can guide future development, and be a foil for future debates
